There are currently three separate packages being hacked on, and each has a TODO page
- TODO vips7
- This is the current development version of the library. Relatively light hacking here: small features, bug fixes, etc.
- TODO nip2
- This is the current version of the user interface. Heavier hacking, since it can drive vips7 and vips8.
- TODO vips8
- This is a from-scratch rewrite of vips and is changing rapidly.
Like many projects, vips version numbers come in three parts: major, minor and micro.
Major version numbers are supposed to indicate compatibility. Version 7, the current major version number, started in about 1994. We are going to abandon compatibility with version 8, due out in 2007, although vips8 will probably include a vips7 emulation layer.
Even minor version numbers indicate stable distributions. Stable has been 7.10 since late 2004 and we expect 7.12 later in 2006. Odd minor numbers indicate development versions. So the current development version is 7.11 and we expect this to turn into 7.12.
Micro numbers indicate releases. In stable, releases just fix bugs. In development, releases add new features.
